Brutalist structure is a term that defines architecture and buildings as made out of raw concrete, Banham gave the French word a punning twist to express the general horror with which this concrete architecture was greeted in Britain.
My Response
This is my response to Simon Phipps and i went to the Brunswick centre in Russel square and took photos from around the centre with both different angels and perspectives of the building.
Simon Phipps Edits
I made my photos black and white in photoshop to match the same style as Simon Phipps i also played around with the brightness and contrast to bring out more shadows and greys
These are my brutalist structure photos that I took around the Bushwick centre and i really enjoyed going around the building and being able to take photos of the building from all its different angels. the building it self is quite unique with its boring concert colours but its very creative architecture.
Thomas Danthony - Brutalism
Thomas Danthony uses brutalism and then simplifies it with simple colour and shapes along with high attention to detail. He use different brutalist structures to complete different projects of his work.
Edits
I edited these photos in photo shop and made them similar to Thomas Danthony's simple photos. I used my brutalist photos from the other project and i just selected specific parts and just simplified them just like Thomas Danthony has with his project.
I used my brutalist structure photos and I simplified them in photoshop by using the Polly lamer tool and using basic boring colours to remove all the details from the buildings and just giving it a very plane look. I don't really like how the photos loose all there details and get given this very boring look.
Thomas Kellner
This is Thomas Kellner's photography work and what he does is that he takes segments of buildings and instead of deconstructing the images he thinks of it as reconstructing it at making people look at it in a different way. He also uses film photography to make a montage of all of his work. After he goes back and he takes the same photographs but from a different angle so that it is re-arranged and creates a unique composition.
My Response
For this we used both bridge and photoshop in photoshop we had a template and just put the photo under the template and twisted the photos separately and had to select them separately with the magic tool and then at the same time we could change them to black and white.
Nicholas Kennedy Sitton
What Nicholas does is that he takes photographs of buildings and then he twist's them so that it turns into some type of looking spiral, it makes the buildings look alien like as if they are curving with the earth. He presents the buildings as if they don't even belong on earth. I really like his work because he makes the buildings look out of this world with there twist's and spirals.
My Response
The way i created these photos was by going into photoshop and slowly cut out circular shapes and then twist them bit by bit as they get smaller, then i created them into a gif also in photoshop just by adding the frames and them reversing them to get this infinite loop of going back and fourth.
Structure of the body
Danny quirk he uses water colours to paint realistic parts of the body from the inside and then photographs them he says that he doesn't use a camera as a camera cant capture the same image and he rathe to draw as he can bring it more to life, he wants to bring medical textbooks to life and make them more realistic.
My Response
This is my Response to Danny quirk, i took some portrait photos of my friend and then found a skull on the internet in photoshop i layered the two over each other and slowly used the brush to expose layers of the skull so that it machetes with the face and gives the person a living skull face making it very abstract.
Myoung Ho Lee
Lee's Tree series which gained international recognition, features solitary trees photographed against a stark white background. The series explores the relationship between nature and artificiality, raising questions about perception, representation, and the human desire to manipulate and control the environment. By isolating the trees from their natural surroundings and placing them against a blank canvas, Lee emphasizes their individuality and draws attention to their beauty and significance.
My Response
This is my response to Lee's Tree series i took both close up and far away photos with a white background that eliminates the surrounding area so that the nature is just shown by it self. Then with the far away photos the white piece of card is still in the same place as it was with the close up and it shows the surroundings around the nature that was isolated before with the close up.
With my final edits for the Lee response i removed my friend holding the blank card to make the photo more aesthetically pleasing with no one in the background apart from mother nature. With the close up photos i played around with the brightness and saturation to make the single tree/branch a lot more exposed in such an isolated photo.

Tilt Shift
Tilt shift is a way to make real life objects seem like they are from a figure and make it seem like the object is not real and a lot small than you think. You need to play around with the focus and saturation of the image in post to give it that unrealistic feel to the photograph itself.
These are the tilt shift photos that I took I think they came out well as I got High up with the drone and took the photos looking more down and I took a series of photos of different places and also the same place but from different angels. Some of the photos I took are really high up about 260m high and I think they came out pretty good .
I edited the photos I took with the drone in photoshop and used the blur filter (tilt shift) to get that tilt shift effects where my main subject is in focus and the surrounding area is slowly going out of focus. I played around with the tilt shift settings made some of the photos more blurry and some of the photos less blurry and I also added a bit a saturation to make the photos a bit more colourful.
Fong Qi Wei
Fong Qi Wei takes multiple photos of the exact same area at different times of the day and then layers them over each other to make it seem like the night is fading into the day in one photo. He uses multiple photos over one and you get a specific view of the place from both during the day and the night.
I took the photos with my drone from the same point of view but at different times of the day so I can make the fade between the day and night just like Fong Qi Wei. I put the photos into photoshop and layered them over each other so when I cut it out the brightness of the photo would change but it would be in the same place . I really like the circular ones as it’s really simple and clean and you can see a clear fade between the two.
Left London James Griffieon
James take photos of abandoned places in London that are run down and also filled with graffiti, he specifically looks for run down places where the paint is coming off and the windows are gone or broken. He also looks for open empty places so that he can get that wide shot of the whole place make it seem very full even though its very empty.
I went to this abandoned place and took different photos similar to James Griffieon you can see in my photos that the place is very run down with a lot of graffiti and all the paint coming off the walls and ceiling the place had no windows and was very open as the building was never finished and just left to rot.
I really like how I edited the photos of the abandoned place, I added a lot more saturation to the photos as I think they look better with all graffiti and all the colours being more vibrant. I also did a few edits with the saturation quite low to make it look like as if the place is on its last legs and the life if it is just being sucked out and its even taking the colour with it.
Favourite development
Tilt Shift
I have chosen to go with the tilt shift development and I will mainly look at train and rail way tracks to make them look more like toy tracks. I will also try to get the photos with the trains at the same time to make it look like the train is a toy on its tracks. Then i could go to different stations and get multiple tracks and trains in one photo. I really like the tilt shift as it makes it seem as if something that has come from real life is turned to a somewhat toy. You take a photo of a real life place and turn into a toy like photo that would come from a cartoon.

Evaluation
These are the photos that i took for my development, i mainly focused on train tracks to make them look like toy tracks. i got lucky and got a few trains going by so i was able to make it seem like its a whole train set along with the station. The tilt shift effect really does make it seem like the photo is a toy. next time i would want to get a bit lower to the tracks and trains to make it seem even more like a toy. To develop it further I'm going to playa round with the distance and see what works best to make it see most like a toy set. I will also go to different stations where there are more tracks so that i can get a better effect. And I'm also going to try to start taking photos of landmarks and different buildings to go with the tilt shift.
Further development
These are the photos that i took for my further development, i wanted to focus more on my height and play around with how much i get in the photo. I also wanted to get photos of more than just two train tracks as i think that the tracks make it look more toy wise, i wanted these photos to be higher up aswell as i can capture more of the scenery. I also think that the more buildings there are in the photo the better the tilt shift looks and it makes it seem more toy like.
Edits
These are the edits that i did in photoshop with the tilt shift, I played around with the different setting's and i made some of the photos more blurry and i also used a layer mask and brush to blend the blur more in together so that it can look more natural. I also played around with the actual tool and i moved it around to different places so its just in the same place asways. for my next development I'm going to focus more on landmarks and a wider range so that i can capture it at a further distance and see what that looks like.
Further development
Further improving tilt shift and trying the work of Kevin McLoughlin
Kevin McLoughlin
I'm going to try doing the work of Kevin McLoughlin with the aerial photos looking straight down on to a specific element and take a lot photos of a similar thing but it has to be in a fully different area so that the surrounding area is different. I would then take all the photos and put them into a photoshop and turn into a gif.
These are the photos that i took for my development of Kevin McLoughlin, first i went onto google maps and looked for something there is a lot of so i went with a a roundabout. Then i tried to find as many as possible in my area and i took my drone up to 150m so that the perspective of the photos is always the same. Some of the roundabouts are smaller so it looks like its from further away but all of the photos where taken from 150m above looking straight down.
After i took all of the photos of the roundabouts i put all of the photos into photo shop and made it into a gif similar to what Kevin McLoughlin did. I really like how the photos had come out as you can see all of the different roads that lead off make it seem unreal in a way which is what i really like about these. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of roundabouts in my area so it was kind of hard to get a lot meaning i wasn't able to do such a good gif with a lot of different photos. i also mixed the two together so i did the tilt shift for every 15 degrees but with the roundabout and made it into a gif.
Tilt-Shift
These are my further developed tilt shift photos, i went to Alexandra palace which is a landmark and i took the drone up and did a series of photos around the place. I really like how the photos came out as on one side you have the view of the whole of London which makes the photo with tilt shift look really good and stand out and on the other side you have a lot of houses which works perfect with the tilt shift. i also took more photos of train tracks as i think that looks the best when it comes to tilt shift.
After i took these photos i put them into Photoshop and started working on the tilt shift, i had both close and far away photos so i used both and wanted to see which look better in the final out come. I really like how both of them came out as once again i was playing around with the height difference but the end result looks really good.
Final Piece
Analysis
I did two different types of gifs. The first one is just a basic one that has all of the roundabouts that i took from 150m above the ground looking straight down with nothing done to them. However the other gif i added the tilt shift effect to all of the roundabouts and i separated all of the tilt shifts with 15 degrees between each other so that in the gif the tilt shift is spinning around and then going back 90 degrees. The photos of the roundabouts came out really nice i found that 150m would be the perfect height for all of the roundabouts as with that type of height you can see all of the roads that lead off making it look out of this world.
Analysis
These two photos that i did with the tilt shift are my favourite that why i made them my final piece as i think that they look the best compared to the other ones. With the one at the top of the north circular i really like that fact how the cars look so small and so toy like that u could mistake them for a hot wheels car. same with the buildings they seem so zoomed out that they just look really toy like. The photo of Alexandra Palace i also really like as the building looks a lot bigger but its still toy like and same with the cars they seem so small with the perspective of the building really giving that effect of the tilt shift.
